Are you a Union member?

Are you Conservative?
KCLS is a fat bloated bureaucracy that has run into fiscal trouble in 2002, 2003 and now again 2010 and has had to ask their voters to lift the levy lid another 8%.
Nobody is really sure how much KCLS will charge Renton citizens - this year your taxes will raise $.42, the next year to $.50 if King County Prop 1 passes. There's an extra $.07 added in there somewhere too for past KCLS capital projects. The budget for KCLS keeps going up and up, and service keeps going down.

Are you Liberal?
KCLS is not accountable to the people: their system of government is appointed, aloof and far away from you. KCLS runs the entire system as one homogenous whole and doesn't take into consideration the differing areas it serves. In addition, KCLS spends much less on poorer areas, and over-spends on areas that are politically connected.
Do you like to read?
KCLS has opened a new branch in Southcenter / Westfield mall - that barely contains any books. It's filled with computers and lots of expensive furniture.

A Renton Library patron can choose from the amazing Renton collection, as well all of KCLS collection.

Do you like your Librarian?
What few KCLS librarians are left are moved from library to library every few days - you'll never get to know anybody. KCLS calls this system "clustering". A few seasoned librarians are grandfathered in KCLS so they don't have to do that, but all our librarians in Renton would not get that option. They'd be scattered .
In addition, KCLS is moving to a more of a "video-store" model where the help isn't knowledgeable, librarians are being replaced with untrained workers.
Renton has had some of their librarians for years - some people have grown up with them. Ask them about anything and you won't get a blank stare.
